Spectacular Polar Stratospheric Clouds over Kiruna in late January 2000

On several days in late January 2000 people in the Kiruna area could see really spectacular and colourful clouds on the sky. These clouds are formed as cold airmasses pass over the Scandinavian mountain range and thereby suffer further cooling.Click on the images to see them in higher resolution.

Polar stratospheric clouds form in so-called lee-waves. These waves form when there is a strong wind from the west over the Scandinavian mountains. The wave structure can be clearly seen. This photo is taken at the Kiruna airport on 25 January 2000.

The photos below were taken at sunset on 26 January 2000 from "Radar Hill" at Esrange, Kiruna. These clouds are typical mother of pearl clouds characterised by the rainow-like colours that vary from pink to green.
